Comments/Problems:

Using expert mode - attempted to install woody (I know you don't see people
using d-i for that much!) The woody kernel kernel-image-2.4.18-1-686-smp 
failed to boot. Presume that it didn't like my SCSI disks.

Seems to me that we can safely close this report. Mostly because installing 
Woody is not something that is really worth worrying about at this point in 
time, but also because the issue looks more related to the kernel than to 
the installer.
