I recently used the debian-netinst installer with busybox
to rescue a botched system, and I got into trouble since
busybox' ifconfig command would not let me set the
MAC address of my ethernet card.

My cable modem only accepts packets from a certain MAC
address, which I set in /etc/network/interfaces for
the working system:

   ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:11:22:33:44:55

Also, busybox' ping should be enabled on the debian network
installer, to allow a user to check whether the right
interface is up on a multihomed box.

An account of the whole matter can be found in
the thread started by my mail:

Enabling ping in the installer has been discussed before, and I don't
really see any convincing new arguments.

Debian Installer is primarily an installation system and not a network
analysis toolkit. If you want to make use of the network during an
installation, you should make sure your network is functional _before_
you start the installation. For basic diagnosis of connections, wget is
perfectly usable.

As Miroslav has indicated [1] that 'ip' can be used to set the MAC address
for a NIC (and I've verified this does indeed work in the installer), and
as the busybox maintainer has indicated that ifconfig is going to be
disabled in busybox post-Etch, I see no reason to keep this wishlist bug
report open.

Cheers,
FJP
