just getting back to you how i managed to start xserver:

Following your advise I installed xserver-xorg-input-all and ...-video-all.
When launching "xorg -configure" i still have trouble since my touchpad cannot be found.
I also corrected the xorg.conf where my graphics was detected as "apm" (!). Actually it's a nvidia go 7400. So right now i'm running on "vesa". Gnome starts out and the touchpad works. I will now install the correct nvidia driver.

I will also file a (successful) installation report.
