Base System Installation Checklist:
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Initial boot worked: [O]
Configure network HW: [O]
Config network: [O]
Detect CD: [O]
Load installer modules: [O]
Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [O]
Create file systems: [O]
Mount partitions: [O]
Install base system: [E]
Install boot loader: [O]
Reboot: [O]

Comments/Problems:
When installing base system, installer said that some packages are
corrupted. (I wrote my net-install CD using K3b and I checked the MD5
checksum before recording disk.)

I ended not installing the base system. When I booted into the system I
installed xorg, kde-core and kdm. Everything works now.

Thoughts:
Expertgui does not give that much more options than typical installgui.
So, I thought maybe just a button on each screen to enter expert mode
when needed.
Extertgui allowed me to choose some extra steps -- e.g. choose network
mirror, which I OKed and later was asked to choose it twice. So, why
giving extra options if they are already part of the standard
installation process?

Thoughts 2:
why not having "install a minimal graphical system" (say,
xserver-xorg-core, kde-core, kdm)

Thoughts 3:
Why not split tingSQL database task into mySQL and POSTGRE and other. I
want mySQL but I do not want to setup everything. Basically, I am
suggesting a finer task selection.

Thought 4:
Great work! From 'installgui' to running system with graphical interface
in less than an hour. If had no problems probably could be less than 30mins.

Did you also run the CD-ROM consistency check that is available from the
main menu of the installer?
Were there any messages in /var/log/syslog or the output of 'dmesg' that
could indicate the cause of the problem?
(The syslog file is also saved in /var/log/installer/syslog after the
installation.)

That is not as easy as it may seems. Also, you can select expert mode
anyway by changing the debconf priority.

This is user error. Blindly selecting additional components is not really
advisable.

These and similar suggestions have been discussed often; this is unlikely
to change in the near future.
We do now have separate images with which you can install a system with
KDE or Xfce desktop environments; this can also be done using boot
options. See the installation guide.

Thanks.

Closing your report as the installation was successful. If you want, you
can still reply about the corrupted packages, but we have just done
extensive testing for the Etch release and I'm fairly certain that it is
not a structural error in the installer.

Cheers,
FJP
