Bug#416308: [RC2][20070402] tasksel and/or dpkg-preconfigure

Package: installation-reports
Version: etch RC2
Severity: important

I tried reinstalling with a daily build from April 2 (20070402) of both the hd-media/boot.img[1] and businesscard iso[2]. If I just select "Standard system" in tasksel I still have the install process stall on the "/usr/bin/perl -w /usr/sbin/dpkg-preconfigure --apt" process.

It appears stuck in an infinite loop in dpkg-preconfigure. Memory usage of dpkg-preconfigure is 7632K (unchanged after 12 hours) and free gives system memory being available (vc 2 during install):

~ # free
           total used free shared buffers
Mem: 906792 525780 381012 0 70568
Swap: 3903752 0 3903752
Total: 4810544 525780 4284764

If I install with nothing selected in tasksel it installs with no problem. So I suspect it it is part of tasksel process, in particular I suspect dpkg-preconfigure.

I believe the failing to produce an error or warning while getting stuck in an infinite loop on a non-expert install on a mainstream hardware (common x86 server configuration from Dell) is at least a severity of "important."

The install works if I select either no tasks, or if I select both "Desktop Environment" and "Standard system". It also occurs if I only select "File Server" task selection.

I don't know if this should be redirected to the debconf package maintainers or not.

If any additional information is needed, please let me know.
