Comments/Problems:
Installation completed with no major issues. A few minor nits:
The installer presented me with three possible network devices: firewire
networking (eth0), ethernet (eth1), and wireless (eth2). However, checking
dmesg showed that the wireless card failed to load required firmware, so it
likely wouldn't have worked if I tried it. Also, while the ability to install
over firewire networking seems quite useful, many systems have firewire, and
most users will not want to use it for the install; thus, if only firewire and
one other network interface exist, the install should default to the other
network interface without asking. (For that matter, only suggest firewire
networking after detecting an attached firewire device that looks like it could
support firewire networking.) The installer may already do so and I just
didn't see it due to the presence of both ethernet and wireless interfaces; if
so, then nevermind.
security.debian.org didn't respond, so I got an error message about
that, and it remained commented out in /etc/apt/sources.list.
In general, when I install with a netinst CD, I only want to install packages
from the network after the initial install, so I had to go remove the CD from
/etc/apt/sources.list . Perhaps the question about using a network mirror
could have three responses: "Use a network mirror only", "Use a network mirror
in addition to the CD", and "Use the CD only"?
I made the mistake of allowing tasksel to install all standard packages. This
still installs far too much. Some examples of things that should not have
standard priority (along with bug numbers when filed; those should become
blocking bugs after this installation report has a bug number):
- Both iamerican *and* ibritish; by contrast, wamerican has priority standard,
but wbritish has priority optional. Bug filed (#416572). (For that matter,
how about aspell instead?)
- The transition package libsasl2, which nothing of priority higher than
optional depends on. Bug filed (#416561).
- libtasn1-3-bin. Most people probably only have libtasn1-3 installed because
something depends on it. libtasn1-3-bin should not have priority standard,
and libtasn1-3 should not Recommend it. Bug filed (#416556).
- selinux-policy-refpolicy-targeted, which pulls in policycoreutils, various
Python packages, and a few libraries. Since when does "standard" include
SELinux? Please don't do this by default; any user can easily install
selinux-policy-refpolicy-targeted for themselves if they want, but doing so
by default introduces both additional complexity and many additional
dependencies in the base system.
Looking for more information on this, I found a debian-devel thread from
November 2006 and a debian-boot thread from September 2006, both suggesting
that selinux-policy-refpolicy-targeted become standard, but neither thread
appeared to have any particular consensus; several people supported it but
several others objected. I like the suggestion from the debian-boot thread
of making SELinux a task; that would seem to address all objections.
No bug filed yet.
- portmap and nfs-common. Anyone actually *using* nfs can install the
appropriate packages; meanwhile, these listen on the network by default. No
bug filed yet, because this seems like a contentious issue.
- pidentd. Again, why install a network-facing service like ident by default?
Why would most Debian users need this? Bug filed (#416570).
- tcsh. Anyone who wants to use this as their shell can easily install it,
just as any zsh user can easily install zsh. Bug filed (#416566).
- mtr-tiny. traceroute and ping make sense to have by default, but why install
some random ncurses traceroute tool? Anyone who uses this could install it.
Bug filed (#416567), but the mtr-tiny bug list looks like nobody has touched
it in a while.
- mpack. Nothing depends on this, and I think anyone who actually uses it
would probably know to install it. Bug filed (#416569).
- procmail. Same argument: anyone using this can install it for themselves. I
don't think someone would install a system and say "Why don't I already have
procmail without having to install it?". Bug filed (#416574).
- texinfo. I can certainly understand having info by default, but why texinfo?
Why would people expect to compile info pages without installing any
additional packages? No bug filed, because I don't know if some valid reason
exists for this to form part of the base system.
- mtools. This made more sense before things like gnome-volume-manager and
pmount. Anyone who still wants this could install it. Bug filed (#416575).

Version: 1.7.1-5.1

Description: The GNU Parted disk partitioning shared library
GNU Parted is a program that allows you to create, destroy,
resize, move and copy hard disk partitions. This is useful
for creating space for new operating systems, reorganising
disk usage, and copying data to new hard disks. This package
contains the Parted binary and manual page.
.
This package contains libparted, the required shared library
used by Parted. This is a cut-down package with no normal
documentation intended to be used in debian-installer.
.
Parted currently supports DOS, Mac, Sun, BSD, GPT, MIPS and
PC98 disklabels/partition tables, as well as a 'loop' (raw
disk) type which allows use on RAID/LVM. Filesystems which
are currently fully supported are ext2, ext3, fat (FAT16
and FAT32), ReiserFS (with libreiserfs) and linux-swap.
Parted can also detect and remove HFS (Mac OS), JFS, NTFS,
UFS (Sun and HP), XFS and ASFS/AFFS/APFS (Amiga) filesystems,
but cannot create, resize or check these filesystems yet.
.
Note that ReiserFS support is only enabled if you install
the libreiserfs0.3-0 package. Since libreiserfs0.3-0 has been
removed from sarge, ReiserFS support is not compiled in the
default package.
.
The nature of this software means that any bugs could cause
massive data loss. While there are no known bugs at the moment,
they could exist, so please back up all important files before
running it, and do so at your own risk.
