Check very carefully against the example provided in: http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/apcs01.html.en You have at least a few options in your file that are useless with a custom recipe: d-i partman-auto/init_automatically_partition select Manually edit partition table d-i partman-auto/method string regular The last is Etch-specific, i.e. is not supported by the Sarge installer.
