I think screenshots would help.
Did you use only the graphical interface? Or did you use the newt
(default) interface?
If if the first, then I think is a (known) cdebconf-gtk-udeb display
issue (which, btw, I thought it was fixed).
Could you try the text interface to seen if you get some similar
abnormal behaviour?
Anyway, better to see the screen shots first, then launch theories :-) .
