There are probably good reasons for the differences. I guess the rules are used to determine if a word that contains such characters is one single word or two words that should be checked separately. In some languages, words combined with "-" are checked as two separate words (doing that for Dutch would make exception lists a lot shorter, but would probably also not be correct). OTOH, I don't understand why periods are not allowed in Dutch as they are very often used in acronyms and abreviations. IMO it would also make sense that aspell be changed to somehow ignore these rules for exception lists, or at least be more flexible in that respect. However, that could make the logic that determines what the word to check is, quite a bit more difficult. I wouldn't go wildly filing bug reports against aspell packages to change things without consulting some upstream specialist. Changing the definition _locally_ for individual languages after agreement with the relevant translators seems perfectly reasonable to me. Cheers, FJP
