Comments/Problems:
Overall setup went fine, but there were several minor problems:

- With a German setup there are no umlauts in the output of console 4. Instead
of the umlaut built by "ae" (an "a"
with 2 dots above) the computer prints an upper case "A" folled by a character
which looks like a filled square.
After the installation (reboot) the umlauts worked in the console.

- I installed the desktop task on a 2.4 GB partition, which was too small so
the installation stopped after
downloading all packages and installing most of them. This is quite
frustrating if you have a slow internet
connection. It should be possible to estimate the necessary partition size
after choosing tasks and abort or at least
print a warning message if the available space is too small.

- Having a not big enough partition and unused diskspace directly in front of
the partition I switched to another
console and startet "parted" after the installation has aborted. But "parted"
wasn't able to resize the ext3
partition created by the debian installer some minutes ago. Error Message:
"Error: File System has an incompatible
feature enabled".
It would be quite handy if the parted version in the debian installer could
handle the partition created by the
debian installer, wouldn't it?
So I had to go back to partitioning and choose a larger partition. There was
no reboot necessary, which is great!

- I didn't choose a swap partition as I have 768 MB RAM. But debian installer
printed a warning like: "You could get
problems during installation if you don't have enough memory". This sounds
like the debian installer would have no
idea how much memory in my system is installed, which is definetely not the
case and I'm quite sure you know how
much memory D-I needs, so please only print this warning message if the user
doesn't create a swap partition AND has
not enough memory, as a normal user could get confused by this message.

- grub did not detect my Debian Sarge installation on /dev/hdc1 (reiserfs).

- grub detected my installed Windows 98 (/dev/hda1) and Windows 2000
(/dev/hda5) (huh, these were dark times!), but
failed to name the Windows 98 partition correctly.
To understand my point you first have to know the following: Windows 2000
installed its boot manager in the Windows
98 partition. So I used to have two boot managers, grub in /dev/hda where I
can choose between Debian and Windows
(=/dev/hda1). If I choose Windows there appears the Windows boot manager where
I can choose between Windows 98.
I know this is not the easiest way, but it's the default, which Woody and
Sarge created.

Grub named my two Windows partitions like this:
/dev/hda1: Windows 2000
/dev/hda5: Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

This is misleading as /dev/hda1 contains a Windows 98. The fact that there is
a Windows 2000 bootloader on this
partition, where you can boot Windows 2000 on /dev/hda5 is not important, as
Grub detected /dev/hda5 so I would choose /dev/hda1 really only if I wanted
to boot Windows 98.
But as I checked: Booting /dev/hda5 out of grub doesn't work.

All the following observations propably don't affect D-I but I don't know
where to report it. So please forward it to
the correct package or point me to the desired place.

- During installation one has to create a normal user (let's call him "U") and
set an installation language (let's
call it "L"). Wouldn't it be a nearly perfect guess if you assume that "A"
should have "L" as the default language in
Gnome if the desktop task gets installed as well?
I know you want to have English as the default language for newly created
users as default, which makes sense on
servers, but if you set "L" for "U" in Gnome you have an advantage on desktop
usage without having disadvantages on
servers, as all other newly created users could get English as default anyway.

- the X-server didn't recognize the refresh rates of my CRT so I was welcomed
by 60 Hz. Changing /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and restarting the X-server solved the problem, but not everyone knows how to
do this.
I have a 17" "Spectrum 7Glr" from "AOC". The correct values are:
        HorizSync 31.5-82
        VertRefresh 50-90
I also wouldn't recommend the 1280x1024 resolution (although correctly
recognized) as it's quite unfocused - better
use 1024x768 as default with this monitor.

- The first time I logged off from Gnome, Gnome hang during logging off and I
had to restart the X-server. I couldn't
reproduce the problem, though.

- Opening the PDF file
http://books.google.de/books/pdf/Romeo_and_Juliet.pdf?vid=OCLC09825959&id=izgALQkNvwwC&output=pdf&sig=7MH9MQDD_sC2laq10ayuefDYnII
and selecting page 3 crashs Evince reproducible.
I don't know if the PDF file is ok. Evince shouldn't crash but print out an
error if the file is corrupt.

- There is a obscure behavior: Being in the Etch gnome-terminal and using
"ssh" to connect to a Sarge computer and
using "vi" on this remote computer the umlauts do not work correctly. I wrote
the corresponding umlauts to
"ae,oe,ue,Ae,Oe,Ue", but vi writes them as "À ,ö ,Ì ,~D ,~V ,~\ ". Lower
case letters are wrong as well, as I didn't
insert the space characters.
This bug does not occur if the command shell or nano on the remote Sarge is
used, there the umlauts are correct.
This bug does not occur if the local "vi" of Etch is used, there the umlauts
are correct.
This bug does not occur if I am in a Sarge "konsole" and connect to this
remote Sarge computer and use vi.
Possibly this behavior has something to do with $LANG="de_DE.UTF-8" on the
Etch-System, as the Sarge systems use
de_DE@euro.

- There really should a Flash plugin getting installed if one selects the
desktop task. I guess the best would be
fixing the RC bugs of gnash and putting it in the desktop task.

- There really should a Java plugin getting installed if one selects the
desktop task. java-gcj-compat-plugin handles
some Java applets correctly, which is better than having no Java applets at
all for most users.

- I really looked forward to see Eclipse in Etch, as it is quite some time in
the archive now. It would be really
cool if you could fix the last RC bugs and get Etch in testing.

Package: libparted1.7-udeb
Status: install ok installed
Priority: extra
Section: debian-installer
Installed-Size: 328
Maintainer: Parted Maintainer Team
<parted-maintainers@lists.alioth.debian.org>
Version: 1.7.1-2.1
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.6-6), libuuid1-udeb
Provides: libparted1.7-1
Description: The GNU Parted disk partitioning shared library
GNU Parted is a program that allows you to create, destroy,
resize, move and copy hard disk partitions. This is useful
for creating space for new operating systems, reorganising
disk usage, and copying data to new hard disks. This package
contains the Parted binary and manual page.
 .
This package contains libparted, the required shared library
used by Parted. This is a cut-down package with no normal
documentation intended to be used in debian-installer.
 .
Parted currently supports DOS, Mac, Sun, BSD, GPT, MIPS and
PC98 disklabels/partition tables, as well as a 'loop' (raw
disk) type which allows use on RAID/LVM. Filesystems which
are currently fully supported are ext2, ext3, fat (FAT16
and FAT32), ReiserFS (with libreiserfs) and linux-swap.
Parted can also detect and remove HFS (Mac OS), JFS, NTFS,
UFS (Sun and HP), XFS and ASFS/AFFS/APFS (Amiga) filesystems,
but cannot create, resize or check these filesystems yet.
 .
Note that ReiserFS support is only enabled if you install
the libreiserfs0.3-0 package. Since libreiserfs0.3-0 has been
removed from sarge, ReiserFS support is not compiled in the
 default package.
 .
The nature of this software means that any bugs could cause
massive data loss. While there are no known bugs at the moment,
they could exist, so please back up all important files before
running it, and do so at your own risk.

Your request is seen.

Honoring your request is another story.

You provided feedback about a twenty issues.
Assume that those twenty items have to be handled by twenty persons.
Those persons have each there own speciality. It is a waste of their
energy if they have to dig in a twenty topic bugreport with nineteen
"off-topics" and only a single interresting item.

Have a look a http://bugs.debian.org/394574 where is single item is
discussed and open single item bugreport in the same way.
See also http://www.nl.debian.org/Bugs/Reporting for more information
about what is going on.

Anyway: Have fun with you Debian GNU/Linux computer system.
