Comments/Problems:

Some of these comments go beyond the scope of debian-installer, but
many of them don't.  I'm being more inclusive here toward the goal
that I should have a fully operational system after the initial boot
after running debian-installer.  Some of the problems have to do with
non-free firmware, etc., but these can be mitigated with documentation
if nothing else.

I needed to pass "vga=771 libata.atapi_enabled=1" as additional boot
arguments.  vga=771 was listed in the special machines section of the
help, but libata.atapi_enabled=1 was pointed out to me only in a
response to a previous installation report.  If this isn't fixed, I
would recommend adding this to the notes that the user sees when
hitting F3 from the main boot screen.

This laptop has builtin wireless (ipw2200) and a built-in ethernet
card.  The wired LAN card worked, but the wireless did not, probably
because of the lack of non-free firmware and possibly also because the
kernel has an old version of the ipw2200 driver.  It took a google
search to figure out about the firmware (though I am quite aware of
the non-free firmware issue in debian).  Once I downloaded and
installed the firmware, the wireless worked, but it worked poorly.
(In contrast, it works perfectly with dapper.)  I manually installed
the latest ipw2200 driver from sourceforge, and now wireless seems to
be working as well as on dapper.

Sound was not configured at all when I first booted and logged in, so
I had to run alsaconf.  Once I did this, sound worked perfectly.  I
had to manually append pcspkr to /etc/modules to get the PC speaker to
work.

This laptop has the eraser-head mouse and a touchpad.  With the
xorg.conf that was generated by dexconf, the eraser-head mouse worked
well, but the touchpad was so slow that moving your finger all the way
across the pad resulted in moving the cursor only about 50 pixels.
I'm not much of a mouse user and don't care about all the fancy stuff
with the synaptics touchpad.  If I simply commented out the synaptics
stuff from xorg.conf, the behavior of the eraser and touchpad were
both fine.

So, there are still a few rough edges to be smoothed out for this
machine to install and work perfectly out of the box, but it was
really close.  Now everything works, which means I can finally run
debian instead of Ubuntu on my laptop like I've wanted to for some
time.  (Yes, I probably could have gotten it to work before, but it
would have a lot more trouble.)

One caution about dapper vs. etch: there was a regression in dapper
about X performance on this machine.  Breezy and etch both have X
configurations that work well, but on dapper, the display performance
is very poor.  I hope that this isn't the result of dapper having
newer drivers such that I can look forward to a degradation of
performance on etch too....

libata.atapi_enabled=1 has always been a temporary solution and should no 
longer be needed with the 2.6.17 kernels. It would be great if you could 
try a daily built image and confirm that (no need to complete the 
installation, just see if the CD-ROM is recognized).

We may add some kind of support for non-free firmware in the installer in 
the future. That is almost certainly post-Etch though. For hardware not 
supported in the upstream Linux kernel you generally are on your own. 
Debian has a different policy about that than Ubuntu does.
We could maybe add a better para about it in the manual.

This is something we maybe could do better. We do install alsa with the 
desktop task, but we don't run alsaconf as in most cases it is not 
needed.

Wow, didn't know people still use the internal PC speaker ;-)

Please file a separate bug report against the appropriate XOrg package for 
that.

I have no idea. The XOrg team may like to know though. Maybe send a mail 
to debian-x@lists.debian.org.
