This can be explained by the fact that Debian does not include some 
drivers in main and the Debian Installer currently does not include 
non-free modules nor loading separate firmware (the latter seems to be 
the problem in your case).

Debian has a different policy for including drivers and firmware that are 
non-free according to Debian's Free Software Guidelines.

Things are currently changing and being discussed on this subject, so 
there may be changes in the future.
