grub and lilo currently support either way (/dev/VG/LV or /dev/mapper/VG-LV).

However, initramfs-tools and the packages which use it (e.g. cryptsetup) only support /dev/mapper/VG-LV.

I'm therefore closing this bug as the /dev/mapper syntax is supported by all programs while the other syntax is not.

So maybe this bug should be reassigned to those packages instead?

No, why? The choice between /dev/mapper/VG-LV and /dev/VG/LV is more or less arbitrary, and neither is "better" than the other, with the exception that /dev/mapper/VG-LV is supported by more programs. I fail to see any advantages of changing the mount path.

In addition, the problem is not even solveable in a reasonable manner in an initramfs image built with initramfs-tools since there is no way to know that a random /dev/X/Y device is a LVM device.

David
