Instead, it went on to setting debconf priority. I tried installing from scratch two times. The first time I just hit enter to confirm high priority for debconf, it went on to saving logs, shell execution and installation abort. I chose antiabortion way and returned to the menu. Menu item 'Finish the installation' just returned back to the menu, so I had to abort in the end. After rebooting the system was semi-ruined. The user I created in previous steps didn't exist, and root logged in without asking for a password. Then xserver reported failure due to misconfiguration, and I was left with a console. At second attempt the only difference was that after the installation failed to finish normally, I chose low priority for debconf and got right back to the menu (vs. saving logs at first attempt). BTW, the images URL at the top and the logs attached are from thissecond attempt. For the first one I used another mirror: debian.linux.org.tw.
Both times I selected 4 subsystems to install: desktop environment, web server, file server and standard system, but on first install (from debian.linux.org.tw) 644 files were downloaded, while on second run (from ftp.jp.debian.org) it was only 545 files. After that I installed sarge using the same method and the same ftp.jp mirror,
everything is fine. That is, only the usual configuration tweaks are needed. If you need any additional information, I could play with the installer for some more days, but not too many. Installation logs are attached. I hope you don't mind that I didn't insert all 15,000 lines right here.
