installing from a Compact Flash IDE using the USB stick receipe

Howdy!

I'm trying to install from a Compact Flash IDE card using the USB stick
recipe found at http://www.debian.org/releases/3.1/i386/ch04s04.html.en
with Etch images from http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/

This installation will go into a device whose only mass storage media is
a Compact Flash card connected via the IDE bus.

I have a Compact Flash reader on my workstation to be able to write the
debian-installer and related files to the media before putting the card
into the target device to launch the installation.

The problems I'm currently experiencing:

1) every time I write the ready-to-use boot.img.gz to /dev/sda1, the
512Mb media ends up showing as a 128Mb media afterwards.

2) the device cannot seem to find the boot sector of the media.

Any help towards making this boot is immensely appreciated.

Best Regards,
