Package: installation-reports
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Hello,

my system has both: board graphic card (nVidia) and PCI card (ATI). Everything went all right during installation, but after reboot the system
launches X and hangs.

I have found that installer used "ati" driver in section "Device" of xorg.conf and also enabled glx (Load "glx") in section Module, however
according to X.org site GLX is available only for chipset up to kernel R200 (http://ftp.x.org/pub/X11R7.0/doc/html/radeon.4.html). For above chips
X.org recommends proprietary drivers.

I'm aware that Debian can't include ATI proprietary drivers nor personally willing to use them. The radeon driver (ati driver is just simple in
between that decides wheather to load radeon, r128, or atimisc see: http://wiki.x.org/wiki/ati). Even vesa drivers work fine.

Using glx extension with ati/radeon driver makes the system unusable. The X server starts, screen goes black and user is stucked. Alt-F1 not
Ctrl-Alt-F1 does not work so it is impossible to reach console as well. The only solution is to press power off button on box and wait for system
shutdown, then restart in recovery mode and edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf commenting out 'Load "glx"') entry.

I'm not sure if it is problem specific to my computer, Saphire graphic card (uses 9600SE) or the fact that there are two graphic cards.

I should have my /dev/hda1 cleared during May => I'll be able to run the installation again by that time.

Comments/Problems:

Broken xorg.conf makes system unusable. Problem is loading glx module for ati/radeon driver.
The config file needs to be edited from recovery mode since it is impossible to reach console
by Ctrl-Alt-F1.

Package: libparted1.6-udeb
Status: install ok installed

Section: debian-installer
Installed-Size: 300
Maintainer: Parted Maintainer Team <parted-maintainers@lists.alioth.debian.org>
Version: 1.6.25.1-2
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.5-1), libuuid1
Provides: libparted1.6-13
Description: The GNU Parted disk partitioning shared library
GNU Parted is a program that allows you to create, destroy,
resize, move and copy hard disk partitions. This is useful
for creating space for new operating systems, reorganising
disk usage, and copying data to new hard disks. This package
contains the Parted binary and manual page.
 .
This package contains libparted, the required shared library
used by Parted. This is a cut-down package with no normal
documentation intended to be used in debian-installer.
 .
Parted currently supports DOS, Mac, Sun, BSD, GPT, MIPS and
PC98 disklabels/partition tables, as well as a 'loop' (raw
disk) type which allows use on RAID/LVM. Filesystems which
are currently fully supported are ext2, ext3, fat (FAT16
and FAT32), ReiserFS (with libreiserfs) and linux-swap.
Parted can also detect and remove HFS (Mac OS), JFS, NTFS,
UFS (Sun and HP), XFS and ASFS/AFFS/APFS (Amiga) filesystems,
but cannot create, resize or check these filesystems yet.
 .
Note that ReiserFS support is only enabled if you install
the libreiserfs0.3-0 package. Since libreiserfs0.3-0 has been
removed from sarge, ReiserFS support is not compiled in the
 default package.
 .
The nature of this software means that any bugs could cause
massive data loss. While there are no known bugs at the moment,
they could exist, so please back up all important files before
running it, and do so at your own risk.

Sorry, but this is nowhere near a critical bug report, not even important.
You still have access to a regular text console from which you can
correct the situation.

Also, we consider configuration of X outside the scope of the installer.
Please ask for help on the debian-user list. If it turns out there is a
bug with Xorg, please file a bug against the appropriate package (without
inflated severity.

Closing this report as the installation itself was apparently successful.
Thanks for submitting your report.

Cheers,
