This sounds like a bug in the kernel packages.
The beta2 release of Debian Installer will use the 2.6.15 kernel and not 
2.6.14. We are currently waiting for hppa porters to update the kernel 
packages used for d-i to 2.6.15.

If you could test whether this problem still exists if you install the 
2.6.15 kernel from unstable on an installed system, that would be great.
