Please try

before the reboot, enter a shell in debian-installer
 chroot /target
 apt-get install build-essentials
remove the gcc (gcc 3.3.4) package
 install gcc-2.95
 ln -s /usr/bin/gcc-2.95 /usr/bin/gcc
 add a deb-src line to /etc/apt/sourcec.list
 apt-get source silo
build the silo package with the "old" compiler
dpkg -i the fresh compiled silo
finish first stage of d-i, which reboots the computer

at the second stage of d-i, which installs the broken silo_1.4.8-1
you have to re-installed the 2.95 compiled silo-1.4.8

and report your milage.

Thanks
