I've already done some work to let tasksel run under d-i's debconf.
However, installing the tasks there will require some apt changes so
that its progress information can be parsed and translated to a progress
bar and the package's debconf questions passed through. IIRC there is
code out there for all of this but I don't know when it will become
available in the packaged apt.

It should be easy to use passthrough to have cdebconf ask the questions
when it's reconfigured in the chroot. But not sure if that's the best
way since after all debootstrap installs the mta just a bit earlier and
with enough work it might be possible to ask the questions then.

Yes, we have fairly little time really for big changes like these that
affect the base system.
