Hindi is not rendered properly, i.e. glyph reordering
is not happening.

Hmm, this is really interesting. Do you actually know what exactly is
needed to make this happening properly.

We also currently have problems with Arabic (non joined letters) and I
suspect this may be the same problem (missing library or so).

detecting bugs like this and the arabic one is often difficult since many of us don't know how those languages should look like if rendered correctly. Talking about problems in font rendering i remember often the characters of the fronend appear messed up a bit (displayed italic and bold when they shouldn't). This happens usually after hardware detecting (pcmcia probing): may this issue be somehow related to arabic and indic ones? maybe a GTKDFB 2.8.3 testcase could help to understand where the problem is , if inside GTKDFB of fontconfig or pango, but some times ago i failed in making this work :(
