Hmm, crashes don't sound good at all. Makes me suspect hardware
problems. Especially since knoppix also fails.
I have in the past had a pentium 166 that would crash when it hit
bogomips calculation, and after replacing the cpu with a pentium 133
that was lying around, the system has run perfectly ever since. Windows
had no problem installing on the pentium 166 although it was less stable
than it usually was.
Could also be bad memory of course.
A 440BX with adaptec 2940 scsi is hardly unusual hardware and it really
should just work if the hardware is working properly.
