This sounds like the kernel may have problems with some of your hardware.

There are several things to try (I'd advise in the order listed):
- boot the installer with "linux26"; this will make the installer use a
  2.6.8 kernel instead of the 2.4.27 one
- boot the installer with the following options:
  - linux acpi=off
  - linux26 acpi=off
  - linux noapic nolapic
  - linux26 noapic nolapic
- download a daily build of the installer (that has a 2.6.12 kernel) from
  http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ and try with that
