Comments/Problems:
The basic install is good but I have now been through it about 3 times this
weekend. I'm slightly more familiar with it than when I started.
I had no ftp client installed via the basic install first time I tried
to install on this machine.
My problems really begin when I try to install X and deskop apps.
First of all for some reason I missed/didn't read the selection screen
to select package sets so I ended up with the basic install and not
a lot else.
I set up the sources.list to get from
deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ stable main
deb-src http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ stable main
deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main
rather than CD but couldn't work out how to get the X window stuff.
I then redid the install and spotted the selection of package sets so I
selected the Desktop one. Downloading everything took a fair while.
I then had to get the synaptic drivers for the touchpad,
xfree86-synaptic-drivers and found that I was having problems with the
laptop when it went into suspensed mode. I'll be trying acpi=off noacpi in
the grub bootloader shortly.
I played around in the X Windows configuration, wanting to see if I could get
a change in the login screen and install other window managers beside kde
and gnome. I would prefer to have a choice of window managers and desktops
presented to me. I don't use gnome, but this is an old machine and kde and
gnome are quite slow to load. I'm happy with a window manager but another
person occasionally uses the laptop and is more used to Windows, so needs
a Desktop rather than a window manager.
Anyway, I screwed that up and had to re-install again. I've downloaded
the Desktop selection again, went into kde and it was ok. Some slightly
buggy things do occur. I changed the taskbar to use small icons. Next time
I loaded up the panel configurator the OK, Cancel buttons were covered by
the panel and I had to hide it to get to them.
There's no firefox by default so I got that installed, but it crashes
at the end of the downloading of a theme, and will crash if I try to
select one of the themes listed. Both themes I attempted to download did
this and they both came from the mozilla site.
Install logs and other status info is available in /var/log/debian-installer/.
