all the proposed modifications are not found in others frontends, but i think are needed to improve the gtk one. Anyway, where should we get those parameters from? from a config file ad-hoc for the gtk-frontend? from shell exported variables?

cdebconf has a flexible config file format, why not put them in there?

you're talking about the cdebconf.conf file, right? if i'm not wrong this is used at compile time and "burns" the settings inside d-i components. I was thinking of something that would allow to change the gtk frontend preferences without the need for recompiling it: maybe a text file or something like that.. is there a way to do such kind of things?
