This only happened while downloading from the Internet.  I happened to be 
looking at the output of dmesg for some other reason, and it was full of 
messages:

hw tcp v4 cksum failed

Looks like I have weird hardware (hw?) or there's a bug or something in the 
TCP code.  More likely a misconfiguration or a hardware error if nobody else 
has experienced this.
