How debian-installer is detecting hardware

Hello,
I using standart debian installer(20041118). I have commented the lines
that consern partman and I do wish to partition the disk with sfdisk. I
download prebuilded sfdisk with wget but the problem is that I can not
partition the hdd because I simply can not find it any more(after
commenting the partman in the preseed). Is there any manual way of
detecting the systems hardware ?
