Yes, booting Sarge with a 2.4.x kernel might have
solved the problem, but I wanted to install a 2.6.x
directly.

I heard it's not that easy to upgrade from 2.4.x to
2.6.x when everything is installed (especially udev
and/or devfs). But well I'm not a 2.6.x expert :).

Sorry but the machine is a bit too heavy to carry it
in the train/bus/tramway :)

Actually, I have solved the problem (in a dirty way,
though): I removed the hard disk from the Zitech PC,
put it in another machine (Compaq Deskpro Pentium II @
400 MHz), installed Sarge with a 2.6.x kernel, then
put the hard disk back into the Zitech PC. It works,
but it's dirty...

It might actually just be a hardware issue... Perhaps
are both the CD-ROM drives I have been using more or
less "broken".

Also, I'm considering running memtestx86 on the
machine, since it might also be a problem with the
RAM.

Thanks a lot for your reaction anyway :)

Alex
