Well, this looks to me like it _is_ your USB Floppy Disk Unit.

That is because a floppy driver is loaded much earlier in d-i than the
hard-disk drivers. During the boot of the installed system, the order is
reversed.
I guess we'll have to think of something very smart to find a solution for
this situation where a removable device is loaded in the same namespace
as the boot device.

Does your i686 machine also have the harddisk on /dev/sda? If yes, it is
most likely the same problem.
