Comments/Problems:

My machine has a HP CD-Writer 9300i as /dev/hdd. A linux boot doesn't
work unless I append "hdd=3Dnoprobe hdd=3Dcdrom".
Doing this had no effect with the sarge installer.

I tried (in expert mode) adding "hdd=3Dnone" to all ide-detect, and
ide-cd, but they don't take this argument happily.

I think we need a way to get those arguments (from the boot line) passed
on to the relevent modules...

I am at a loss, and installing from woody.

I think this has something to do with d-i kernels using devfs names
for devices.

Undoubtly, devfs names for devices (which will, as far as I have
understood *be obsoleted* in 2.6 kernels) are highly confusing for
most skilled users (all those of us using Linux for years).

(in partitioning tools, boot loader installers and so on)

I've seen, at Solutions Linux, a confirmed Debian user and package
maintainer, fighting several dozens of minutes with devfs names while
hacking another user's installation.

Informal exchanges there confirmed that this devfs choice is very
badly accepted and may become one of the major subjects of angriness
(I don't find the english word for "reproches") against d-i.
