Date: 15/12/04 16:00
Method: Downloaded ISO image of both netinstall and businesscard.
Burned images on CDR. Booted PC with those CDs. Got packages both
from CD (netinstall) and network (businesscard), both directly from the
net (ftp.ntua.gr through my company's proxy) and also from a local
apt-cacher repository.
Machine: OEM PC
Processor: Intel Celeron (Mendocino)
Memory: 46 MB
Root Device: IDE ATA (Seagate ST34321A)
Root Size/partition table: 2.0 GB on / with ext3 - no other partitions
Output of lspci and lspci -n: N/A (lspci not available from within d-i)

Comments/Problems:
At 61% of the installation process, it dies with a red screen and
the message "The debootstrap program exited with an error
(return value 1)."
VT3 shows:
Unpacking iptables (from .../iptables_1.2.11-8_i386.deb) ...
Errors were encountered while processing:

The exact same thing happens when using the netinstall image (hence
reading packages off the CD, which I checked and it reports that its
integrity is OK) and the businesscard installer (hence, it fetches fresh
packages from the net.

It seems extremely likely that not defining a swap partition is causing
all these problems. As Debian Installer runs entirely from memory, it is
very much possible to run out of memory, especially if you also use extra
memory for RAID processes.
Looking at the logs, it seems to me that the failures occur when memory
intensive processes are run.
If you want to check this, switch to VT2 while base-installation is
running and do cat /proc/meminfo a few times...
You should also remember that all packages that are installed from the CD
are first copied to /var on your harddisk, so a 1GB root partition is on
the small side if you don't specify a separate var partition.
I am closing this bug report as you seem to be causing the problems
yourself by creating conditions that don't allow the installer to
function normally.
Cheers,
FJP
