Bug#285436: Installation report Apple Powermac (OldWorld) 7600

Package: installation-reports

INSTALL REPORT

Debian-installer-version: 20041118 ftp.at.debian.org
uname -a: Linux elk 2.4.27-powerpc #1 ven sep 3 09:34:51 CEST 2004 ppc GNU/Linux
Date: 2004-Dec-11/12
Method: Boot from daily build floppies of 2004-12-10
 http://people.debian.org/~luther/d-i/images/daily/powerpc/floppy/[br]oot.bin
Install via network, internal MACE ethernet controller.
Using a local mirror mirrored from ftp.at.debian.org (about 2 weeks old)
 Didn't use a proxy

Machine: Apple Powermac 7600 120MHz
Processor: Powerpc (OldWorld) 604 120MHz
Memory: 128 MB
Root Device: /dev/sda, using a
  ACARD AEC-7720U LVD/SE SCSI-to-IDE Bridge Adapter
with a cheap 200GB Maxtor Y200P0 IDE Disk
On the internal MESH (Fast) SCSI bus
Root Size/partition table:
   cat /proc/partitions:
   8 0 199148544 scsi/host0/bus0/target6/lun0/disc 5479 9499 118456 33260 892 413 10480 29890 0 29370 63160

  /dev/sda2 : / 7GB ext2 (see Note!!!)
  /dev/sda3 : swap 380MB
  /dev/sda4 : /data 180GB ext3

Note: I first made the root partition an ext3 file system. But during
installation of the boot-loader quik, the installer complained that
for quik we *need* ext2. So back to start.

Question: Does quik really, absolutely *need* ext2? Or can I convert
  the partition to ext3 now?
This also determines if the installer should be fixed (notifying the
user early in the install that if using quik, the root fs should be
ext2) or if the check for ext2 should be relaxed to also allow ext3.

Base System Installation Checklist:
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Initial boot worked: [E]
Configure network HW: [O]
Config network: [O]
Detect CD: [ ]
Load installer modules: [O]
Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [O]
Create file systems: [E]
Mount partitions: [O]
Install base system: [O]
Install boot loader: [E]
Reboot: [O]

Comments/Problems:
 "E" for "Initial boot worked":
Initial boot only with daily build 2.4 floppies. Not with rc2 installer
(all floppies from rc2 installer are *immediately* rejected by the mac)
From the daily build floppies only the 2.4 series worked for me, for
the others I'm getting a blank screen when debian-installer starts.
Note that I can log in on the second console, this means the kernel is
running fine but d-i has some problem with its output method.

I made an "E" on "Create file systems" and "Install boot loader" above,
because I had to go two rounds making the root fs ext2 -- otherwise I
was unable to install quik. So either fix the automatic choice of
filesystem here, or relax the check for ext2 to include ext3 depending
 on the capabilities of quik.

<Description of the install, in prose, and any thoughts, comments
and ideas you had during the initial install.>
  - After reboot, and *after* probing for X-Windows, I had a kernel
crash after installing the first several packages (it crashed when
unpacking gdb :-), the kernel message was:
    "Kernel BUG at skbuff.c: 319!"
I think this was due to hardware probing, at least the system is
running fine since. After second reboot (X install didn't ask me any
questions on the second try) install went smooth. I installed only
    the Desktop packages.
  - I get lots of messages that date is not set correctly. This was due
to installing a new bios battery just before doing the install.
Since I don't have (and want) any Apple software for this machine, I
did not set the date. This maybe should be done early on in the
install, maybe during time zone selection after the reboot.
    Sample msgs from log:
tar: ./preinst: implausibly old time stamp 1956-08-28 04:10:15
    tar: ./preinst: time stamp 2004-07-26 19:56:25 is 1511970370 s in the future

  - The gnome desktop (nautilus, corba, most panel apps) crashed after
first login due to the wrong date. After removing .gnome*
.nautilus* directories and setting the date correctly the second try
    worked.
  - I had to manually set pc105 keyboard in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
otherwise {[]}~ keys would not work in X. I'm using a CALCEUS apple
    compatible full-size keyboard.
  - The ^ and <> keys are exchanged. Probably a bug of the keyboard
hardware, but who knows. I'll fix this with an xmodmap.
  - I'm using a mac-mouse with 2 buttons and it works!

I'm including only the hardware-summary from the logs.

This is the first time I was able to install an oldworld powermac with
sarge, thanks for the good work!
