I was able to create a volume group, but not logical volumes.
When I deleted the physical volumes and created ext3 partitions,
I wound up with what was showing as a bunch of physical volumes.

(Maybe part of the problem was I was trying to use the entire disk as
a physical volume, which overwrote the disk label.)
