How do you use it from within d-i?

What about a machine with a modem to the Net and an Ethernet card to
the LAN? In standard mode, the automatic configuration will find the
Ethernet card and the user may rightfully enter the static address
information, not knowing that this is going to prevent the later
access to pppconfig from within base-config.
