As there are many succesfull installs with GRUB,
I allow myself to say that the serious problem is GRUB with your hardware.
Suggested workaround:
Activate lilo before reboot.
Debian-Installer for i386 architecture has LILO included.
To trigger it, select <back> before the reboot.
You will see the main menu, select there LILO.
