Subject: [pre-rc2][netinst][i386] failure: Dell Optiplex GX280

Package: installation-reports
Severity: normal

Hi,

although I'm reporting this as a failure, there are workarounds,
so I've set the severity to normal.

The reason for failure is ugly and complex but I think I get it now.
The basic problem is some mismatch between (some of) discover1,
hw-detect, and kernel-image-2.4.27.

Please could someone reassign to the right package and clone as
appropriate.

Package: installation-reports

Comments/Problems:

I stopped installation at the detect hard drives step, although I could
have continued with a workaround.

The workaround is to change the "SATA operation" bios parameter in the BIOS.
The bios has a menu structure, you need to dig down to "Disks:SATA Operation".

On the first attempt I had this parameter set to "Normal".

[bug 1] (discover1 mishandles SATA disks on ICH6 chipsets)

As you will see from the logs, hard disk detection fails because discover
wants to load the ata_piix module.
However, for reasons unknown to me, this module is NOT included in the
SATA support for 2.4.27. This goes back to upstream: the changelogs at
kernel.org show ata_piix was added to the 2.4 kernels in 2.4.28-pre1
(http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.4/testing/patch-2.4.28.log).

The problem was also evident in netinst 20041004, see below for URL.

There are two possible workarounds:
1. boot with 'linux26' instead. Then disk detection works fine, because
ata_piix.ko is included in 2.6 kernels.

2. change the bios parameter "Disks:SATA Operation" to "Combination".
The disk is then correctly detected as "hda" and partitioning can
   proceed normally.

Fixes: could 2.4.27 have support ata_piix patched in?
Or must this be an erratum?
Before choosing, this probably relates to bug
 #269784 and http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2004/10/msg00461.html

The first workaround above turned up another bug.

[bug 2] (red background in first installer screen)

when booting linux26, the first screen of the installer (Choose language)
has a red background, indicating an error, instead of the usual blue.

This has already been fixed, it did not occur with netinst 20041004
(http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/cdimage-testing/daily/i386/20041004/sarge-i386-netinst.iso)
I mention it because I'm sure other people will report it.

[bug 3]

Also when booted in linux26, the partitioner behaved strangely.
After the "configure hostname" step, I saw an unusual first screen
for the partitioner. It showed 3 options:
  all-in-one (recommended for beginners)
  desktop
  multiuser workstation
There was no "manually edit the partition table" option.
By hitting "Go Back" (which took me to the main menu) and reentering the
partitioning step I got the familiar partman screen (displaying the options
largest free space, entire disk, manually edit).
I made notes about this at the time but I could not reproduce the behaviour
later. I had a USB key plugged in to the machine at the time, perhaps this
is relevant.
I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature. I think the lack of a way to
do a manual edit in the screen I described is a problem.
