Bug#269036: Sarge: debian-installer partitioning failure

Title: Sarge: debian-installer partitioning failure

Package: installation-reports

Debian-installer-version:
http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/cdimage-testing/daily/i386/current/sarge-i386-netinst.iso      28-Aug-2004 23:40
http://people.debian.org/~joeyh/d-i/images/daily/hd-media/2.6/initrd.gz               29-Aug-2004 16:27
http://people.debian.org/~joeyh/d-i/images/daily/hd-media/initrd.list             29-Aug-2004 16:27
http://people.debian.org/~joeyh/d-i/images/daily/hd-media/vmlinuz                 29-Aug-2004 16:27

uname -a: (none since install failed)

Date: 30-Aug-2004 14:00

Method:
Tried network install on a hard disk with previously installed SuSE Linux 9.0 and Win XP.
Intention was to install Debian on a new partition /dev/hda7.
Boot: from /dev/hda3 using GRUB (SuSE)

Machine: IBM Thinkpad R50

Processor: Intel Pentium M 1500 MHz

Memory: 512 MB

Root Device:
(from SuSE) cat /proc/ide/ide0/hda/model
IC25N040ATMR04-0

Root Size/partition table:
(from SuSE) fdisk -l

Disk /dev/hda: 40.0 GB, 40007761920 bytes
240 heads, 63 sectors/track, 5168 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 15120 * 512 = 7741440 bytes

Device Boot    Start       End    Blocks   Id  System
/dev/hda1   *         1      2349  17758408+   7  HPFS/NTFS         # WIN XP
/dev/hda2          4695      5168   3583440   41  PPC PReP Boot     # IBM system partition
/dev/hda3          2350      3321   7348320    c  Win95 FAT32 (LBA) # data partition. I booted from this one
/dev/hda4          3738      4694   7234920    f  Win95 Ext'd (LBA) # extended
/dev/hda5          3738      3805    514048+  82  Linux swap        # swap (SuSE, to be used for Debian also)
/dev/hda6          3806      4694   6720808+  83  Linux             # SuSE root partition
/dev/hda7          3738      3738        30+  83  Linux             # created at previous
/dev/hda8          3806      3806        31   83  Linux             # repartition attempt - see below

I had previously tried to repartition from the running SuSE Linux.
I had already freed the space between cylinder 3738 and 3806, but the enlargement of the
extended partition didn't work, probably since its logical sub-partitions were mounted.
So I intended to repartition with the debian installer, enlarging /dev/hda4 to go from
3738 to 4694 and creating /dev/hda7 from 3738 and 3806, and to install debian on it.
But I didn't get there...

Comments/Problems:
Everything went fine until the partitioning step. The partitioner refused to detect the
existing partition table. I was only offered the possibility to entirely erase the HD.
So I could not proceed. :(
