After a normal install with debian-installer of sarge, I chose
'Desktop' for the standard combination of packages with gdm as
the default display manager. Logging in for the first time with
a normal user account showed kdm. Some searching showed the
alternative x-session-manager to be configured 'auto' with kdm
as default.

This was a bug in gnome-session, the fixed version has been slowly
progressing toward testing, and should get there in the next couple of
days.
