Hi Alan, It seems like one explanation for your problems is that all the output goes to the serial console instead of the terminal (for reasons unknown). I have heard at least from one other person on IRC (maybe it were you? ;-) who had very similar problems. Could you please try and hook up to the machine's serial console and see if it works?
