Can you try a new image from
http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/sarge_d-i/ and see how well
that works. It should definitely install a kernel and boot loader.

framebuffer on i386 usually works, but there is an option to turn it
off. Just boot with:
linux debian-installer/framebuffer=false
