linux26 seems to work for most people (works perfectly with my Toshiba
Satellite A40), so I think this is worth looking into.
I'm not sure it is necessarily related to the installer though...
Please send the photograph (or make it available on a website).

This option is present. Just select the partition and change the usage method
to 'keep existing data', the select /home as mountpoint.

Should have installed both Gnome and KDE and all components from X needed to
run them...

Did you have 'xterm' installed the first time? If not, AFAIK the moiré screen
is correct.
