Comments/Problems:

Hesitated what CD image to use, the smaller (40? MB) would probably have been enough. Used the 110 MB one.

Bootprompt Linux26 did not work for me. Computer/screen froze halfway formatting hdb2. Screen was legible, but had thin vertical bars (one per letterwidth?). Something about unable to open VESA buffer. Made a photograph if you need it. But it was "experimental" anyway.

So I tried kernel 2.4.

While the automatic /home partition is great, an option not to format the /home partition would be even better. It was backed up though.

Taskselect did not work for me, (I asked for desktop environment and X). I think some gnome stuff got installed, but startx did not do anything.

So I apt-getted package X and then "~# X" gave me the moiré screen.
Apt-getted packages KDM&KDE, and then "~# startx" Just Worked.

Starting the X-server gives some colored artifacts in the moiré screen, will compare my old config. Size of screenimage changed, I used to have a full size linux image, and a somewhat "shrunk" W98 image. Adjusted the new linux image to larger on the monitor, and w98 is probably now full size as well. So the autodetection on this point is probably better then my handwork earlier.

Floppy does not work, I need to enter that myself in /etc/fstab, I think.

Restored /home from another machine.

I then "dpkg --set-selections"-ed my old programs. After pressing enter I realized dual boot loader is now grub and not lilo as before. No problem, lilo did somehow not supercede grub! Great!

All in all a comfortable one morning exercise, doing laundry etc, and just occasionally returning to the machine to fill out some more debconf questions (I guess that was the "many questions" option).

Great, appreciate all your hard work,

Boudewijn van der Drift
