Comments/Problems:

It looks like the CD is mounted with no RR extensions or something similar.   
The problem is that the installer cannot find the Release file.  I see in 
virtual console #4 that grep is looking at /cdrom/dists/stable/Release.  But 
in the shell, if I go to /cdrom/dists and I ls -l, the files "stable" 
"testing" and "unstable" are not symlinks to sarge, but just empty plain 
files.  Mounting this CD from a working Linux system shows the proper layout, 
but not on a PC during the install process.
