Don't you just need to delete that partition and create some new ones,
one of which is /var and one /usr?

The delay is three seconds (yaboot uses the value of timeout if delay
isn't set). I'll bump it up to five seconds for the Linux/OS X/etc.
choice and ten seconds for the second-stage Linux choice. Does that
sound OK?

Current daily builds have this; you'll get an hda16-Linux option or
similar at the second stage.
