Comments/Problems:
I hope to see this debian installer behave similar to the WINDOWS
installer, where it timeouts when the CD is in the tray. User
intervention is required to start the installer, by a press of a button.
This saves out on the stages whereby the CD has to be manually removed
and put back in again.
I don't understand that addressing standard of target0/target1. Usability problem?
When you are in the manual partition menu, and finish writing a
partition, you should move on to next menu. I was a little confused why
(it seemed to be) that the installer was asking me to partition my hard
drive again.
Also in that manual partition menu from where you cfdisk. (Should have
written the title down). It did not prompt me to automatically partition
the hard drive. Why not?
Then when I managed to select automagic partitioning, it creates ext2!
Why is ext2 the default? Surely ext3?
The install lilo menu also has a usability problem. It gives a text
field of the /dev/dadada/target0/disc/etc. Am I really supposed to know
how to edit this field? Ideally do not get this menu at all. Or at least
give the user some sort of menu of possible choices. Not a text field.
Terribly annoying stage of ejecting the CD, ejects the wrong CD tray.
This machine has a CD Writer and a CD Reader. I installed from the CD
reader, as it is faster.
After the reboot, is the where the Debian Installer ENDS?
As I have further comments. There is a strange message on the console
after reboot. Something to do with /dev2/root2 or something.
The password setup menu is terrible. First about shadow passwords and
NIS. What is NIS? People who use NIS can re-configure this option. Have
them on by default and do not ask the user!
Next the root password. One page for telling the user about the root
password, next page is a little window with text input. Can't these two
pages be on ONE page? It solves other usability problems too.
Regarding the keyboard. I want the language to be british english, but
my (Finnish) keyboard setup correctly. Entering proxy details with a US
keyb was frustrating.
Apt Security dialog is also pointless. It people do not want security
updates when upgrading, they can re-configure. By default: on, and do
not bother the user for the decision.
When it comes to choosing package manager. How come no aptitude?
I chose tasksel, and I can't help but wonder why I am asked in 3 menus
at least about pcmcia-cs. I do not have a laptop! The installer should
know this ?!
I put in the proxy details in the installer (apt?). When I finished the
install I used lynx to go to a webpage. However it didn't work. Why
isn't it getting the proxy details?
I only chose X from tasksel. It didn't work. I think it didn't do the
mouse section probably, but again this isn't the Debian Installer's
fault is it? Where should I file bugs related to that?
