Sarge Install Report
OK. Everything went really well. I have an AMD Athlon XP-based
system, 512MB DDR RAM, with an ASUS A7V-333 mobo, VIA K7T/333
chipset, 3dfx Voodoo3 video card AGP, SoundBlaster Live 5.1 Audigy
sound card PCI, Netgear FA311 Fast Ethernet Adapter PCI (Nat Semi
DP83815 MacPhyter), Netgear DM603 Ethernet/USB modem/router, Sony
Trinitron 17" E230 monitor, Standard 104 key keyboard US layout, PS/2
mouse (A4Tech). First IDE channel has a Western Digital 80GB disk,
then a Seagate Cheetah 40GB disk, then the second IDE channel has a
Sony CD-RW and a Sony DVD-ROM.
The installer correctly detected all my hardware but I had trouble
connecting to the 'net briefly. I had to exit to a shell and run
pppoeconf for my ADSL connection, and then pinging my nameserver gave
me 'destination net unreachable.' I don't know what I did but the
routing entry for the default route was wrong. I didn't add the
route manually since I didn't know how to do it (didn't want to
experiment!) but setting my system to bring up dsl-provider at
boottime and rebooting fixed the problem; the default route was added
correctly at next boot and the installer continued pretty much where
I left off since I hadn't gotten any packages at that stage anyway.
It identified my video card as SVGA instead of using the tdfx X
server. I'm not sure if that makes much of a difference. I changed
it to tdfx when it offered SVGA.
The installer was just brilliant!!! Well done everyone :) It kicks
ass!
