Comments/Problems:
I tried the following boot lines

linux
linux26
linux nodma
linux nodma ide=nodma hda=nodma idebus=nodma
linux26 nodma ide=nodma hda=nodma idebus=nodma
linux nodma ide=nodma hdc=nodma idebus=nodma
linux26 nodma ide=nodma hdc=nodma idebus=nodma

All fail at the stage of trying to load packages.
(Can someone remind me where the nodma spells are written down?)

It looks like the system is not interpreting the TRANS.TBL in
/cdrom/dists correctly; the stable->sarge symlink in /cdrom/dists/ is
interpreted by the system as a file, not a symbolic link. But it is
correctly listed as a link in TRANS.TBL.

There are messages of this nature just before the failure
(hence all my nodma fiddling)

This may be discover-data's fault - although I don't quite see why.
/var/log/syslog shows that discover1 and discover1-data is being used.

The cdrom was burned with the same procedure I used for an earlier
(successful) install of beta3 (on different hardware); I don't think
it is at fault.

Hope this is helpful.
