Could you give more information about what exactly failed with the
logical partitions.

This is a limitation of cfdisk -- in many cases it can not read the
partition tables created by parted. Even worse -- if the disk
geometry changes (for example the user changed LBA as Linear in BIOS)
then cfdisk could write brocken partition tables or remove existing
partitions.
