This is relatively good news. Does it load initrd.gz sometime before the
VFS problem occurs? If so, you might try passing 'root=/dev/rd/0',
'devfs=mount' (should no longer be necessary), in any combination, I
suppose one of them might work.

The whole problem might be better talked out on IRC: irc.freenode.net,
#debian-boot, you're welcome to join. I'm anxious to get Sparc CDs working
and this seems like it could be a simple problem to fix.
