They are only required if you use bad block relocation, multipath, or
snapshots.  These are all things that one can live without for installation
purposes.

That's unrelated to the kernel situation, then.  All discovery is done in
userspace.  It's entirely likely that the udeb has further brokenness; I
haven't touched it in a long time.
