I don't know, I was just under this impression and seemed to recall I
had read this somewhere. It would have been a good explanation of why
shm was used here. I also remember struggling some time ago with
outdated NIC drivers that didn't build any more when trying to compile a
2.4 kernel for an old m68k mac.
